Model Moment: Rise of the Dragon

Vogue UK recently published an article on the rise of Asian models in their mag. I glimpsed through the article, and in my opinion, it is well written with several insights on Asian models, and the reason they are increasing in numbers at full force in the fashion industry, which still remains largely dominated by Western faces and designers.

I agree that the rise of Asian models is in tandem with the blooming Eastern economy. Western fashion houses see a growing, untapped base of customers and fans of their products in the Asian market, thus attending to their needs and wants is a smart and necessary move to internationalize. Think of how LV didn't stop at selling monogram bags in mega stores in Chinese cities, and went to conceptualize an entire Orient-inspired collection for Spring 2011. Think of how Chanel didn't stop at selling couture to the rich Chinese, and even went to open the prefall 2009 show in Shanghai, calling it the Paris-Shanghai Métiers d'Art Collection.

Thus with the vast array of fashion collections with Mandarin collars and Cheongsam-inspired thigh high skirt slits showcased on the runway every season, it seems natural that more Asian faces walk down the runway as well.

My favourite new comer is Xiao Wen Ju. Her face resembles a chinadoll. She is definitely one of the most unique faces I see after Emma Xie. Another relatively new model in the Western scene is Sui He. She was placed among the top 10 new faces this fall on style.com, and she grabbed the opening spot at Ralph Lauren, making her the first Asian face to do so.

I'm also excited that Singapore finally has a representative at the Ford Supermodel of the World competition next year! I realized that in the past, Singapore used to participate in this competition broadcasting the competition on Channel 8, but it has ceased for a long time till this year! The winner is Chinese-Indian Puvana S. She was called "ugly" by her classmates, according to the local press. However, she is far from ugly! Her unique look is sure to take her far in the world finals in NY.

Well, I hope that using Asian models on the runway is not like Sportswear looks on the runway -- just a trend that will fade in time. Examining the fashion scene and economy now, Western designers' love with the East should not, and I hope will not wane in the near future.

Well many high street brands have great collaboration with designers & it girls. These brands come up with capsule collections coveted by all fashionistas..as they are deemed to be designer ware at a fraction of the cost! This fall, H&M will up its game with a tie up with Versace. Previous collabs with other designers like Lanvin and Stella Mccartney were already a sell out worldwide, and this time, high street will go plus haute, plus luxe with such a well known couturier. Judging from the pictures available, Versace's signature embellishment, beads and flowy pieces will not be missing in this commercial spin. Apart from menswear & womenswear, Versace will design some homeware pieces as well.

The reason I'm blogging about this exclusive collection is not because H&M is coming to Singapore, but more on the fact that many Singaporeans are hoping this collection will come to the new store here this September! and considering that I got an email from the press from H&M sg regarding this collection, I really hope they will bring the gorgeous couture worthy pieces to our sunny shores.

Many fashion magazines advise fashionistas to buy accessories, as simple accessories can jazz up any look, from a basic shift dress to a casual bf shirt and jeans ensemble. No doubt my sister and I have been investing some $$ into accessories, especially belts and necklaces. (although I still can't bear to splurge on statement pieces as I do have a decently modest budget)

One of our favourite shop includes Aussie's DIVA. It's array of sparkling accessories sorted out by colours and patterns adorn the walls and shelves of its pristine interiors. Knowing that its the Great Singapore Sales now, DIVA's offerings are not to be missed. The sales for past seasons accessories start at $3, but I will say most necklaces and ea

rrings are 7 bucks and up. I bought a gorgeous ring for 9 bucks. It may not be the best steal in the shop, but this ring was really unique and it looked expensive.

For those who prefer unique accessories, several online shops offer such handmade treasures. Here are some of my recommendations. They do have different price ranges, but above all, the jewellery in there are gorgeous!

AFF Perspective no. 2

As I interned at SPRING Singapore, I had the privilege of attending STAR CREATION, the show in search of new Asian designers. Walking around the Belvedere VIP lounge tasting macarons and drinking vitamin water was a totally different experience from ushering and stuffing mags & bottles in goodie bags. It was realy exciting to be invited to a show!

Next, I realized how insignificant volunteers were in the eyes of the invited guests - yep that's a hard fact. While as an usher I may think that I did contribute a little part to the flow of the entire event, yet all the audience want is a good show with no hiccups. I guess that's the case in all kinds of shows - theatre, dance and even fashion. On a side note, Star Creation was a little disappointing. There were really great outfits from the finalists (and crazily unwearable ones), but the commercialized creations from last year's winners was a let down. It seemed as though the past 3 winners have lost their creativity to commercialism.

Apart from the Lasalle graduate show, the other show I thoroughly enjoyed was Raoul one. It was oversubscribed with several cases of double seatings, and guests standing along the ailes together with us ushers. Ok back to the show, the entire collection was amazing. It was a monochrome fall collection with bursts of tangerine and violet. Raoul did just as what the brand was famous for -- amazing tailoring of workwear. The pieces were so well made and flowy, that I'm sure they will be coveted by every working woman their among the audience!

AFF Perspective no.1

I have signed up as a volunteer at AFF! I was down at the Tent @ Orchard on 19 (opening night!!) and 21st night so far. Volunteering as usher/packer wasn't easy, for several reasons:

1. Had to wear black the whole day.

All ushers were dressed in long-sleeved black shirt and formal black pants..it got really hot after a while, doing the packing of heavy stacks of magazines and carry the heavy AFF bags to every seat.

2. Strict rules!

Strict rules were a must of course, given that the organizers wanted to portray a professional image, so photography was not allowed!!

3. Appreciated or not?

Sometimes, I felt quite unappreciated as an usher, or quite insignificant in other words. The space between the front row and the runway was so narrow, so standing right in the middle of that narrow passageway shoo ing people off the runway was really weird, especially since i was standing over a switch right in front of David Gan before The Inspiring World of Redken show commenced.

Of course, the perks of being a volunteer should be recognized as well. I definitely made new friends in the short 2 days, and apart from that, I got to watch the shows for free =)

The Missoni AW show was great, with Tao Okamoto opening the show. She was a stunner on the catwalk!

The LASALLE graduate show was a show to remember as well. There were many gorgeous outfits, and what I loved about the show was te wearable yet creative designs. Not many groundbreaking and OTT creations like in overseas grad shows, but it was great nonetheless.

My two favourite looks are as above. I simply love the well-draped cyan maxi. It is something different from the other maxis in high street stores!

We are starting to love skirts and we're adding them into our wardrobe in a steady stream! However, nothing bothers my mind most other than finding the perfect maxi skirt. After seeing models sashying around with the swishy skirts on and even off the runway, I feel that the maxi skirt is a perfect staple, even in sunny Singapore.

Hi all!

We've had a really really long break again..so much has happened last December and during the first 3 months of new year. To update this blog about the past 4 months, here's what we've been doing.

1. work!!!

It's a fresh new start this year as we have so much free time after we graduated from junior college. So we went to search for jobs and I'm glad we both found enjoyable work!

My sis had an internship with DP Architects just ended last week (she's going to do architecture in uni!), while I'm spending a few more months at SPRING.

2. driving lessons

It's really fun to drive. Last time we only rode bikes and drove bumper cars, but nothing comes close to driving on the real road. It makes me feel grown up now! However, we are still rather far from getting our license.

3. travel

The two of us just went travelling together! It was really very exciting as I had never travelled so up north before and the furthest I've been to was Paris. We spent some time in Norway as well..and crossed the artic circle! We went on a reindeer sledge, and slept in a Sami tent. The huskies were beautiful too!

4. shop!

Our love for shopping just keeps growing. Two of us share one wardrobe, and it is bursting soon! Because of work, we've been spending some $$ on formal wear for work. Here are some fall trends that we love and will never neglect even if they are out of trend:

Toy soldier style shirts and blazers are to die for as shown on the runway. I fell in love with military inspired wear when I saw the classy Zara's shirts in store. For a cheaper alternative, we got a chiffon button down from KISSJANE at Citylink mall.

We bought a poofy ballerina inspired skirt from New Look. Tulle netting is definitely my favourite material around. It looks so whimsical and light..and a la Black Swan! I wear the skirt to work quite often even when my mum says it looks like a feather duster..

Living in a tropical country where fall-winter trends cannot be embraced too dearly, the Spring/Summer season is always worth the excitement and buzz. I confess that I haven't been following the runway shows lately, but Elle Singapore's March Issue which includes a S/S 2011 trend book got me all hyped up bout the latest happenings in fashion once again. And what's more, Singapore's very own Audi Fashion Festival is back again, promising to be bigger and better with the inaugural Men's Fashion Week. Missoni and Ungaro are opening and closing the festival respectively. (more info here)

In addition, sighting a festival of greater scale must be accompanied by more generous customer expenditure and a heightened interest in fashion by the general public. In my view, the population here definitely surpasses the criteria. High fashion has transformed the facades of glittering new malls along Orchard Road, high street fashion is having a greater share in this commercial pie with H&M set to open, local fashion is raking in great figures through Parco and blogshops alike. The latter has gotten me really fascinated. Right now, blogshops that modeulation is really into are missypixie, LOEF and lovebonito just to name a few.

P.S. Modeulation is very tempted to volunteer at the fashion festival or just sneak in.

BACK. & prom rules!

We're back...and it’s been exactly 8 months!!!! It's a little worrying that this blog might be left to rust in cyberspace. Sorry for the long hiatus - school's been really busy, but our major A levels are going to end pretty soon in about a week's time. I've to admit that my sister and I have had futile attempts to shun the virtual world during this long study break. I still had to treat myself to the occasional thefashionspot read or Seventeen magazines! Apart from returning to Mode.ulation we are really hyped up about our upcoming PROM at a 5star hotel in the heart of the city and we’ve been conceiving our dream dress between cramming biology notes. We pretty much settled on a few rules on our shopping plan:

No black. As much as everyone loves to don an LBD, we agreed that black’s not a great idea for us. Classy and elegant, this shade (I wouldn’t consider it a colour!) is a little too mundane for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The only way to stand out from a sea of black is to go for colour – jewel, pastel or even neon, anything goes. However, I do love a cute LBD paired with coloured tights a la Erin Fetherston in fall 08.

2. Maxi. It will be important to find a tricky balance between the price factor for more fabric and the elegance of wearing a floor-sweeping red carpet worthy dress. No matter what, we will keep our eyes peeled for bargain steals. (Below: Erin Fetherston resort 11)

3. Accessories. Considering the rather limited array of dresses one can find on this little red dot, sticking by the rule of accessorizing will keep it safe. There will definitely be a slightest chance that someone may wear the same dress as you, but accessories will help to make the dress unique.

From Prisons to Paris

Days ago my friend commented that fashion isn't very recognized in Singapore and hence expressed his doubt in entering this precarious industry. Upon further thought I couldn't help but disagree, as the local fashion scene is definitely a flourishing one abuzz with vibe and I already find it quite difficult to keep track of the several happenings in town! Granted, one could perhaps only name the annual Audi Fashion Festival if asked about any local fashion news worthy of excitement. Yet fashion has taken a bold turn here in Singapore and it's definitely more than alive and kicking!

First up Calvin Klein showcased his Spring Summer 2010 collection in the former Queenstown Remand Prison in January this year, taking the local fashion scene by storm and convicting us that the most happening events can take place in the most unexpected of locations. Well, creativity and thinking out of the box was all it took to make waves in the young fashion industry here and carve a name in Singapore's history.

But fashion in Singapore is not confined to luxe labels setting foot in new malls dotting Orchard Road. Local labels such as Elohim and Harryhalim are redefining Singapore fashion in subtle, unannounced ways. I was pleasantly surprised to see Elohim's Spring Summer 2010 campaign at bus stops and even more excited to see Harryhalim's Paris Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion Week debut! Talk about national pride!

Perhaps then it is still valid to claim that fashion is and will be a precarious industry in Singapore, at least in the near future. However things have certainly changed - the population's perception of fashion and of style, big brands' view of Singapore as a lucrative retail market and the society's enthusiasm for promising talents of tomorrow. Thus to me, the sun can only continue to rise in Singapore's budding fashion scene. As to what's in store- we shall wait and see.

I'm on the verge of giving up. No, I will never stop blogging fashion. After all, who can stop musing on the creativity that oozes from the multitude of masterpieces that grace the runways each season? But my point is sometimes these all too glamorous creations evolve so fast, to an extent where they gather to become an avalanche, crushing my sensory perceptions, stripping away any chance to stop for a breath of fresh air. Pessimistic? Perhaps. But until fashion takes a break (which it never will), I cannot help but feel that the burden of keeping up with fashion season after season, trend after trend, somehow diminishes my passion for it. If only I were fully devoted to fashion, then perhaps my enthousiasm would, on the contrary, be fuelled by the breathtakingly rapid changes of creation.

Now I see the point in fashion bloggers going full time. And I see the point in designers' wanting to go on hiatus.

Same here for school.

Tutorials, lectures, tests, projects and assignments never take a backseat in school. But unlike fashion, nobody condemns you when you slack off temporarily. After all, fashion is mean business whereas school is an educational playground, ideally speaking. And we do have holidays. So for me it's all about A levels this year. It's time I get my nose buried in those books and look forward to the fruits of my labour at the end of the year. Then will I perhaps reignite my passion and get back to business.

Runway Rave: Techno tribal

The Haute Couture spring collections are in full swing in Paris, and Jean Paul Gaultier's collection has been mindblowing. Just one scroll down the pictures, I could see mixed ethnic and bohemian influence striding down the runway. Apart from paying homage to the sci-fi blockbuster Avatar, this collection appears lmore ike a tribute to globalisation - an amalgamation of Mexican, Asian and Tribal. Each look was a feast for the eyes with the detailing and fanciful accessories, coupled with the models' giant sombreros.

A hint of the Amazonic indigenous tribes in this tulle gown decorated with geometric leaf cutouts, and a moss-adorned headgear.

Asians will definitely identify this look with chinese porcelain or 青花瓷, in a less delicate and more structured form.Techno tribal is all the rage, and will be here to stayeven after Alexander McQueen's spring showing, as shown in this corset-like minidress with a truly Gaultier style.

Weaving and macromaid details were seen on the dresses, and even in the models' hair and hats. The 'enfant terrible’ of Parisian couture is back to make waves again with this collection that goes beyond pretty and redefines bold.

Spotlight: benWU

Structurally sound and intricately constructed, let your imagination take flight with Ben Wu's newest collection. Recently unveiled at Mandarin Gallery's new mall, the local designer's second line benWU is more classic and individualistic than Tian.

Choosing a safely daring palette of neutrals for spring, benWU tinkered with different fabrics and contrasting structures that held true to his aesthetics.

My personal favourite is the toga frock below. The revealing of a tinge of green in a mainly monochromatic collection is daring yet refreshing. This dress appears beautifully constructed, yet soft and sinuous at the same time.

A new year's for a fresh new page of fashion and style! But before all of that, we need to straighten up some things in our hectic schedule.

School reopens next week and I really need to clear up my study corner at home.

I need to catch up on sleep after staying up for long hours during the holidays. My skin is suffering from this...

A levels are up this year so we twins better study hard and play hard and blog hard together! =)

Dance to keep fit! For someone who's not that sporty, I can say dancing is the best to shed those pounds and shed the stress.

Raffles Design Institute X OC

Orchard Central is one of the latest malls to hit Singapore's shopping belt. Yesterday we visited it again to view the graduation showcase by RDI, one of Singapore's leading design school. Spread over areas on L2, 4 and 5, the exhibition displayed works by the Advanced Diploma graduates in various fields of design, ranging from fashion to interactive media design.

Some really creative pieces of jewellery design were on display. I love the concept of gears fused in jewellery. The graphic design campaigns featured some extensive marketing and design research, and the variety of work was quite impressive.

The most eye-catching one was a campaign regarding chinese funeral and incense burning. The concept was creative and different. We also managed to collect quite a few freebies like a badge and a fresh apple!

It's definitely been a while since our previous blogpost. These hols saw a whirlwind of activities for us - from our Overseas Community Involvement Project in Vietnam to intensive dance practices as we gear up for a dance competition in Barcelona next April. And before we knew it Christmas is arriving!

Malls have sprung up here in Singapore and crowds are high on the festive mood, hinting the end of recession and a hopeful year to come. To most of us, the Christmas season might well be a season of partying and pampering ourselves with the hottest holiday trends -- sequins and all things bling. To some of us, Christmas is a season of thanksgiving and spending time with our families. However to me, be it giving or receiving, the true meaning of Christmas is about celebrating the wonders of God's love, the birth of Jesus Christ and sharing this good news with others. So this post is not about fashion, because right now my mind is set on the beautiful lyrics of Christmas carols, and that joy that I feel beyond racks of holiday partywear and beyond presents beneath that christmas tree.

Fresh Spreads: Trash Couture

Vogue Korea's December issue spells wow, and its the reason why it remains as one of my favourite Vogue editions today. The cover font and styling is always so different that it outshines its comtemporaries.

The cover may appear dark and somewhat unattractive to consumers, but nevertheless, it's still Karlie and her death stare.

Her editorial Trash Couture is far from trashy. Just take a look at the lighting and the gorgeous set, I think Vogue Korea is on its way to win international appeal. I will definitely want to grab a copy for it if I chance upon one!

Spotlight: Rock & Republic

Rock & Republic looks ever classy and rock with Charlotte Carey as the brand's new face. She is a gorgeous Indonesian-English, currently signed with Storm and IMG New York. Although petite for a model, her dynamic poses in these shoots make her legs look miles long. Watch her working the camera in this video.

This is my favourite dress. The simple deep V neck cut on top makes way for the ultra-embellished bottom. Who says minimalist can be boring.

The knee-length boots and micro mini dress fit perfectly well together.

Heels for a great cause

The fashion community (or rather killer heels lovers) have come together to support a great cause. Jimmy Choo and Elton John AIDS Foundation have launched a photo competition to support the launch of Project PEP, a charity collection that donates 25% of sales to the Simelela Rape Centre in South Africa.

The theme of the photo competition is ‘You, Your Shoes and 72’ and the entries have been really fresh and fashion-forward.

Fresh Spreads: Interview

Celebs never look greater - other than on the covers of Interview magazine. Even if the cover looks amazingly airbrushed, the makeup is a real stroke of artistry, and the colours simply surreal. One of the most striking cover was Lindsay Lohan in the February issue:

This October/November's cover features Kristen Stewart, of Twilight fame. I can't wait to catch the sequel New Moon on the big screen (even though I really think the movie adaptation can never compare with the original novel).

Billows and billows of luscious tulle floated down the Spring 2010 runway. One of my favourite luxe fabric, I believe tulle is really difficult to handle. Nevertheless, designers, armed with their couturesque craftsmenship, created several gorgeous tulle pieces effortlessly.

Viktor & Rolf is definitely one of my faves this season. Each and every looks spells artistry. Quoting one of the duo at Viktor & Rolf, "With the credit crunch and everybody cutting back, we decided to cut tulle ball gowns." What a great concept conceived with great execution.

We are finally back - somehow I do not like the fact that exams come during fashion week. I treated myself to the latest Paris runway happenings and found that my favourite trend - the one shoulder toga is here to stay!

Spring has kickstarted in NYFW, this time, with fresh-faced Australian import Rachel Rutt. Born Half-English and Half-Singaporean, (go the little red dot!) the Pan Asian is touted as Aussieland's answer to Devon Aoki. Beyond that, she is framed at 5'11, and sweeping through New York with some of the familiar runways under her belt.

Let the Ad out of the Bag: Fall 09/10

There is no time to lose in fashion. Before I knew it, the Spring 2010 Fashion week has commenced when I was just about to blog about the array of fall 09 ad campaigns that greeted me in my latest magazine purchases!

My favourite is definitely MIU MIU.As compared to the previous seasons, this fall 09 ad has definitely toned down in colour, but definitely not in terms of impact. To me, this is the quintessence of timelessness -- a quality which merchandisers should seek to exude in their ads in the gloomy times of recession.

I really love how simplicity is luxury in here.On the other hand, Prada, evidently aiming to simplify and employ the same tactic, pales in comparison for me. I really loved the collection and expected an austere, perhaps medieval and silently impactful ad campaign. However, I do not quite relate to the water and models' expressions. Stronger, more uniform expressions would have definitely helped.

Sadly, I prefer Prada's previous campaign where many outfits are displayed in a single ad. This season's would have been more impactful if the colours were tweaked in the direction of Miu Miu's monochromatic palette.

And Fendi's monochromatic palette of stonegreys spells sublime! Rich furs and lush bags toted by stunning Stam and cold stone walls, this Fendi campaign is, no doubt, leaving smoke in my eyes.

Seems like I'm feeling biased towards reduced colours this season, but no, I really do love the burst of colours in the ad campaigns of Louis Vuitton, Kenzo and Marc Jacobs!
Marc Jacobs is intriguing and I'm really drawn into its ads and having the confidence that its campaigns would only get better in the seasons to come.

On the flip side of the coin, a few ad campaigns were definitely a letdown.One of them would be YSL. I applaud its courage to encapture the inspiration of Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian MAn. Surely, this drawing is revolutionary but it needn't be so explicit in the ad campaign. The naked man makes the ad look cheap. Perhaps the rationale behind the use of the Vitrutian Man idea is to boast the exquisite proportions and workmanship of Yves Saint Laurent's craft, but the representation is simply not apt.

Gucci was also quite a letdown. The juxtaposition of models with awfully hip poses made it look tacky. It does no justice to the clothes. I wish more energy was put into the ad, with a portrayal of motions frozen in time instead of still cliched poses that kill the energy of the clothes. The fall 08 campaign of models prancing in the fields was much better.

Many may not have heard of FOX fashion, but it is already spreading its wings of fame in many Asian and Middle Eastern countries. One glance at these pictures of Bar Rafaeli and you may think it is just another European fashion retail chain. What you may not know is that FOX is a brainchild of Israel. It may not be the first store to jump on the trendy bandwagon, instead clothes at FOX are more snug than trendy, and more fun than sophisticated. Happy clothes I would call it - with Disney hoodies, hiphop-worthy cargo pants and bright-coloured sweaters. FOX's signature style include bold patterned tanks and tube tops, and pieces with bold embellishment such as a sequinned clown and camisoles with ruffles and laces.

This Fall, FOX presents their collection in 3 key ranges- Active, Urban and Limited Edition. The Urban Fusion collection will feature vintage-syle tees ready to bring all fashion lovers into a world of nostalgic and funfilled childhood. Whereas "Limited edition" will satisfy the needs of the youthful, with quirky use of plastic prints in bright colors, shiny plastic buttons and pins, prints of cartoons and graphics. Memorable pieces include a cute flippy skirt with black heart buttons.

Topshop has brought in fresh new ideas this fall, with clothing separated into 4 themes.

Manhattan Dolls

Think looks ideal for razzle-dazzle cocktail parties and discoes. Inspired by 80s power-dressing and cocktail party glamour, Manhattan Dolls emphasizes exaggerated shapes and show-stopping colours. Body con dresses are ignited by shoulder-padded glittery tuxedos, the dressy will love their sparkling minis and sequined separates.

Marianne
The collection takes inspiration from 70s groupies and has a vintage glamour feel. Luxurious fabrics are given an antique finish; together with heavily sequinned and knitted embellishment. Sequined dresses, harem trousers and high waist knickers are made high street with oversized cardigans, Extravagant mink boleros and lush velvet jackets are made a staple for winter too.

Highland Fling

As the theme explains, the clothes boost a traditional Scottish vibe and English eccentric; classic tartans, antique fleurs and oversized checks. Luxurious knitwear has an heirloom quality, ready to be thrown on for any tea party in the jardin. There are also military-inspired coats with cute accents such as gold brass buttons. Tough leather boots top off the entire lookbook, together with bright knitted hats and scarves.

Horror Girl

Everything here comes ragged, ripped or highly distressed. The looks make the models appear as though they just emerged from a horror mansion infested with cobwebs in a haute manner. The recurring motif of bloody red font is printed on blazers and woolly jumpers. Interesting touches include cobweb-like lace and lattice panels. Victorian nightwear is reworked and appears in ivory colored blouses, bed jackets and corsets. There are delicate pieces alongside tough denim jackets, and jeans are slashed or bleached while leather is distressed. Studs and eyelets toughen the look further adorning jeans and fitted jackets, and knits appear moth-eaten.

I first heard about Bershka on lookbook.nu, where nearly all the wonderful Spaniard's outfits had something Bershka in it. Not much info on Bershka's fall 09/10 collection is released on the web, and here are some sneak peeks of the catalog.

Fashion is in a constant search for fresh faces. This time they are on the prowl for the twin factor. Identical twins, especially, look so strong together they have a certain mysterious factor in their eyes and expression. Elite’s model twins Elena and Manuela Lazic have proven this right in their editorials together. Both of them were discovered after winning 3rd place at the Elite model Look France together last year.

Another pair to watch is Gwen and Donna Loos at WW Models. They may not be exactly identical, thus explaining their different portfolios so far. Gwen already walked for Nina Ricci and Chanel, appearing in a lacoste editorial and the Philosophy Resort 2010 lookbook. However both of them are equally cute and fresh-faced, looking a little like hybrids of Caroline Trentini and Sophie Srej.

Think America's Next Top Model gone local. Self-touted as Asia's most groundbreaking online reality show, SUPERMODELME.tv showcases a fierce competition between 10 models from across the Asian continent including Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand, the Philippines and India to be Asia’s next hottest face on runways and magazines.

The show first aired online last Tuesday and the first 2 episodes have been rather promising. There may not be OTT girl drama or internationally acclaimed judges, yet this reality show brings me closer to home with the little red dot as the catwalk stage and local supermodel Charmaine Harn as host.

Spotlight: Tribute to Lacroix

On 7 June I rushed down to the National Museum of Singapore to catch Christian Lacroix the costumier. The exhibition brought in numerous fashion illustrations and costumes from Lacroix's atelier. Through this exhibition, I got to come up close and discover for myself the couturier's ingenuity as a stage costumier.

Firstly, the illustrations of the costumes for various theatre pieces truly reflect the Lacroix aesthetics. Behind each stroke of ink and pencil was spontaneity, vibrancy and humour. His sketches were the first signs of innate creativity as a designer, expressing the silhouettes and dazzling colours on paper.

Lacroix definitely finds theatrical solutions to couture dresses. Each costume was intricately crafted with vibrant textures, such as a corset-like belt embellished with upholstery fringes and heavy layers of taffeta, lace and tulle. The tutu in Les anges ternis were my favourite. Tulle mini skirts in full swing - a depiction of elegance and grace. Lacroix commented on the ballet tutu, "It's a mad invention, both magical and surreal. But tutus are part of tradition. And that's where they take their full measure, their full value."

Lacroix's illustrations and embellished costumes paint a picture of spectacular elegance light-hearted fantasy revue. One thing to note even in the face of a shaky future for the couturier's house, Lacroix remains an unforgotten legacy on stage.

Azure sky. White sandy beaches. Foamy waves. An ideal backdrop for summer editorials, ushering in the breezy wind yet casting away the heat spell. July's Numero Tokyo ed titled Solo dance featuring Tanya D captures the light and sheer of summer fashion. Dancing in the sun - be it in a Hermes candy-coloured striped maxi that catches the wind or the commfy tee and shorts is definitely great fun (minus the occasional sunburns). So all hail summer - the sun's up!

Designer Spotlight: Bollywood Swatch

The collaboration between famous Swiss watchmaker Swatch and Indian fashion designer Indian fashion designer has kicked into stores. Mixed in his luxury collections of fashionable accessories are bright, contrasting and colorful combinations, intriguing forms, glammed up Bollywood, pop culture, humor and brimming over life's joy.

The collection consists of five designs: Huge In All, Giant Shimmer, Dancing Hands, Over Charm and From Within. Each encaptures the vibrant style of Manish Arora in different ways.

Below are wonderful reviews of each article, taken from GUM Trading house.

HUGE IN ALL - Swatch offers to your attention another piece of game-study of decorative materials' opportunities. Wide black strap of artificial leather of this beautiful Irony Nabab model is decorated with carved heart-like flowers, symmetrically arranged on both sides of the body. From the numeral 12 part the patterns have bright fluorescent green lime background color, and from 6 part the background is bright orange. Strap's clasp, watch's body and bezel are made of stainless steel with PVD-drawing of shining gold color. The dial of this model also calls a sense of charming delight. To indicate hours arrows, the designer used golden plated numbers (Roman for 3, 6, 9 and 12 and Arab to the rest), contrastingly distinguishing on the background of the fluorescent pink dial. With a closer examination it is seen that the background of the dial present an interlocking spiral patterns, and symbolic pink hearts. The hour and minute arrows count the time and bring their contrasting notes in the entire palette. The hour arrow is executed in green lime color, and minute arrow in blue.

GIANT SHIMMER - The unique Irony THE Chrono model has once again confirmed the flashing sense of Swatch humor. Catching the overall romantic collection's mood, the designer adorns massive bracelet's links with giant relief images of shining symbolic hearts. Bracelet, body and bezel are made of stainless steel with PVD-drawing of shining gold color. The bezel's circle is decorated with 36 white crystals. At one parallel to it on a structured red dial there is another ring of smaller size white crystals. Giant silver dollar sign with a textured decorative surface dominates on the dial. Chronograph counters do not have any numbers and divisions. These are equipped only with golden arrows on the background of almost imperceptible pattern of the dial's textured surface. The figure represents variation on the collection's heart-like flowers theme. Golden hour arrow and minute one with white light storages as well as a thin golden central seconds arrow measure the time.

DANCING HANDS - Honoring and admiring the art of dance, this fantastic motley Swatch Puzzle Motion model is covered with frames' images of hands' movements studded with jewelry. Strap-folio is decorated with a number of colorful images, each representing a hand, standing in a symbolic gesture of dance. Fingers of each hand are decorated with one or more rings, and the wrist is adorned with colorful bracelet. Clasp and watch's body are made of opaque pink plastic. The body frames the colorful dial, consisting of eight rotating disks. On the colorful background of each disk a big picture of a dancing hand decorated with jewels is again repeated. As the arrows pass the time cycle, the disks on the dial are rotating, providing a variety of combinations of colorful dancing hands. Colorful dial's range with slight variations, repeats the color on the strap watches. There are no numbers and points. Thin black hour and minute arrows count the time. OVER CHARM - Hearts are always topical in the works of designer Manish Arora, therefore namely they adorn this delicious Skin model. Looking at the watches, you can always feel a romantic atmosphere and Bollywood style. Bracelet's links of stainless steel represent hearts inserted into each other. From the bracelet's links the trinkets in the form of hearts of stainless steel with inserts of transparent or colored polymer clay and crystals of white color are hanging down. Bracelet includes opaque dull plastic body of silver color. The Heart topic again appears in the center of brightly pink fluorescent dial: it is the image of another heart, covered by a flame of love. Shining silver hearts on the dial serve like watch's arrows: big hearts are 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock, and small hearts are all other hours. Short, elegant and silver hour and minute arrows are coming out of the center of another silver heart, whose image is painted on the watch's glass.

FROM WITHIN - A real lady should be a lady-vamp in a playful and tempting image not violating, however, the overall romantic collection's mood. Bracelet of the carefree light Irony Square Lady model is made of stainless steel with PVD- golden drawing. Each shining golden link is adorned with a pair of large pink crystals in the form of heart. Wide bracelet's shining path leads to the body and bezel, which are also made of stainless steel with gold PVD-golden drawing. The pink heart-like pattern symbolizing infinite love is drawn on the bezel. Turquoise-colored dial sets off a turquoise frame, and shiny steel hour arrow and minute one with rounded tips count the time.

In conjunction with the Audi Fashion Festival, Go Red For Women presented by MasterCard, is auctioning 10 little red dresses designed by budding fashion designers from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Singapore Heart Foundation’s Go Red For Women campaign. Symbolised by the little red dress, the campaign aims to empower women in their fight against heart disease and stroke.

Here are some of my favourite picks:

Inspired by parchutes sashaying high in the sky, this design by Nicholas of Nic Wong evokes a sense of bliss and surrealism. The couture-like details such as folds and draping showcases his clean cuts and structural style.

A well known young thai designer, TIMMY is best known for his combination of modern vintage chic with a feminine touch. This semi-formal cocktail dress is based on the popular children novel The Little Red Riding Hood. I love the crisp asymmetrical cape and the corset-like structure of the bodice.

Reckless Erika is a young and quirky local brand,balancing classic tailoring with more avant-garde use of silhouette, and constructing avant-garde silhouette with classic details. This dress is simple, yet adorned with luxurious pleats and gathers, in a deep red colour.

Jakarta-based designer Nikicio designed a flirty openback short dress that reflects a women's power and sexiness.

I first took notice of this young label when I heard it will be showcased during Audi fashion festival together with other upcoming brands. Elohim was created at the start of this year by Malaysian designer Sabrina Goh. Upon her graduation from Lasalle Singapore, she worked for various local brands and Sino London.

Her spring summer 09 collection will be showcased at the Blueprint 2009 featuring Blackmarket show. The entire collection is rather minimalist and understated. Silhouettes are crisp and clean, featuring well constructed vests and shift dresses. The play of textures and asymmetrical vs symmetrical structures was evident in this collection.

I particulary love the motif of LEGO. The statement accessories make the bulk of this collection of well-crafted clothes, such as the geometric lego necklaces and the lego-studded leggings. Overall this young brand has a long way to go and has the potential to develop into a full feleged pret-a-porter collection. It is currently stocked online and locally at Blackmarket and Hide & Seek.

The recently concluded Hong Kong Film Awards proved that Asian celebs can look stunning on the red carpet as well. Each celeb begged to differ at this event of glitz and glamour.

Famed actress Monika Mok strutted down in a nude empire-waisted gown with cascading layers of chiffon.

Tang Wei's shanghainese classic style shines through in a flaming red toga dress.

Zhou Xuin was as sweet as ever, yet sophisticated in a simple monochromatic gown. Her classic updo and scarlet lips adds radiance to her smile.

Sandra Ng's structured gown was uniquely eye-catching. The prints reminded me of the lush art deco period, as well as pretty optical illusion.

Xiong Dailin paired her sweetheart neckline frock with a sparkling choker. I simply love the play of different textures of this black gown.

Barbie Hsu literally looks like a Barbie doll in this gorgeous pouffy gown. The red corsage serves as a great contrast against the metallic grey and black.

I recently love to view Aussie fashion magazines such as RUSSH, especially in tfs threads. Online, I just discovered Oyster magazine. Their website, to my surprise was updated with editorials and fashion updates.
The latest Issue 80 features queen of reinvention Grace Jones, designer Rick Owens, Haute Couture darling Alexis Mabille, as well as the brit cover girl Alice Dellal.
Interesting reads online include write-ups on Afghan designer Tina Kalivas' "Zarafshan" collection for AW 09, and exclusives on cult musicians.
The editorials online are well, really mind-blowing.

Let the Ad out of the Bag -- Ray of McQueen

Firstly, we would like to apologize for the lack of updates! We're currently really busy with school as there's a never-ending stream of homework coming our way...

And so is the fashion world a rapid that sweeps every victim off their feet.

While most S/S 09 campaigns have been unveiled, McQueen keeps our breath held tensely with the revelation of its second campaign. I really prefer the first though, but seeing that the clothes in the S/S 09 season are of much stronger, striking character, this ad certainly looks promising. The model's pose is a dynamite, and its repetition electrifies the viewer, just like a laser beam does.

The fall/ winter collection features McQueen's signature mind-blowing proportions and shapes, but this time with less fanciful prints and body-hugging corsets. The fashion genius did not compromise despite the recession --headpieces and elaborate heels emerged on the runway, but this time, with heavy hints of modernity such as metals, bolts and studs. Overall an intoxicating show of gothic colours and lethal silhouettes balanced with graceful prints and tesseleations of soaring birds and whimsical circles.

Rockabilly is back! Think tough leather, leopard prints, biker jackets blinged up with sequins and metallics. Every rock fashionista would crave for a piece of DSquared2 - printed tees, loud prints and leather skinny pants, paired with oversized sunglasses and a regular starbucks coffee creates a casual-meets-rock image. Charles Anastase punks up his sheer cropped organza pants with a glossy biker jacket and oversized white tee. This fall Blumarine turned to neons, leopard prints and bling to present a Balmain-inspired collection. The jacket-and-flashy-jeans combo may seem OTT, but it still oozes an ideal dose of rockabilly attitude.

The 5os vibe is present in beauty editorials such as April's Vogue China. Du Juan and Sara Blomqvist show us what rock is with uber doses of rock attitude and uber loads of hair. Hair was toussled and teased to the maximum, like a huge beehive. Black winged eyeliner and strong brows also topped off the look.

Hermes S/S 09

A picture speaks a thousand words. I can faintly hear the wind caressing supermodel Angela Lindvall's hair, I can smell the whiff of fine sand grains, and I can feel the warm heat radiating from this gently-sunkissed ad. Hermes' ad campaigns never fail to stun. What more can I say? The ad is glowing gloriously, and the background - be it the sky or the desert - glitters beautifully against the divine bags and shoes.

Hermes was not the only campaign to embrace mother nature this season. Sisley too, shot the ad in a desert, but with a more abstract concept. The clean compositions and down-to-earth perspectives are definitely a thumbs up for a perfect juxtaposition with the rich flowy textures of the clothes. While the clouds and sand patterns converge to the middle, leading the eye to the models, the golden frame adds an element of interest to the neat campaign, giving an ancient classic touch to the ad. All in all - the simplicity is overwhelmingly powerful. It feels as though the ads are singing a song of praise to nature, and celebrating the creation of light at the same time.

Style Scout: Models off-duty

Sometimes the best of fashion week is seen off the runway. I do find streetstyle more inspiring and down-to-earth than some avant-garde designers' runway looks, which are meant to stay on the runway. The models' streetstyle introduce nothing new, but nothing short of chic too. Their back-to-basics outfits never go out of style as shown in the fashion week snaps below.

Tailored

Chanel's double-breasted blazer is one statement-making basic to appear effortlessly chic amidst the clamour and glamour of fashion week. Imogen Morris-Clarke shimmery minidress and black buttonless jacket stood out against a backdrop of European city lights.

Military

Military-style coats with brass buttons and checkered scarfs never fail to look chic and keep out of the wintry cold.

Leather

Black leather is everywhere- paired with graphic tees, checkered shirts or simply an all balck ensemble as worn by Kiki Kang.

Fur

Sara Blomqvist balanced her oversized fur coat with a waist-cinching belt and basic black leggings, while Skye Stracke's black fur-trimmed collar trench is a classic staple in a fall wardrobe.

fall 09/10: Balmain, Karl Lagerfeld, Preen, Costume National, Giorgio Armani

This season what's black and shiny strut down the runway together, like a lock and key. Designers embraced the darker side without forsaking shine.

Futurism was present at the house of Balmain and Karl Lagerfeld, wherein the former, a metallic and geometric bodice added a futuristic feel to a ruffled mini dress, while the latter showcased a classic LBD embellished with a crisp shimmery neckline. At Preen, a figure hugging number was brought to life with swirls of violet sheen that reminds me of molten lava. An asymmetrical dress at Costume National was well balanced with two minimalist black and crinkled golden halves. Giorgio Armani's show was nothing short of classic with a prettily draped silver and black sweetheart dress, paired with a lush velvet coat.

WWD.com- Dolce & Gabbana, American Vogue and the mayor of Milan will fete the Extreme Beauty In Vogue exhibition at the Palazzo della Ragione with a red-carpet event on Monday March 2, with the likes of Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts. “This show is about the beauty in its most challenging sense,” Vogue’s Anna Wintour said at a press conference Saturday. “It’s not about lipstick, it’s not about hairspray, but about the very definition of beauty in complicated and sometimes disturbing ways.” The exhibition is designed by French architect Jean Nouvel and features 89 photographs from the past 80 years of American Vogue, exploring contemporary ideas about beauty and coincides with Dolce & Gabbana’s launch of its debut makeup collection. Photographers include Edward Steichen, Erwin Blumenfeld, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Steven Klein, plus an entire section is devoted to Irving Penn. “The photographers that you see on the walls have thought deeply and creatively about these questions,” Wintour continued. “Looking at their work from the perspective of the challenges that we are all facing today, offers a reminder that sometimes the most difficult times can be the most productive in the arts.… As [Italy’s] own great poet Dante wrote, ‘Beauty awakens the soul to act.’ I hope you will feel this after the show.” The exhibition opens Wednesday March 4, in Milan and runs through May 10, before moving to London, New York and Tokyo.

How I wish that I were in Italy! This exhibition is simply breathtaking -- I love how the photographs look like paintings, esp. the work of Clifford Collins, which appears to emerge from the Surrealist movement. Aimed to investigate the role of beauty in our culture, this exhibition captures the cultural attitudes towards female appearance and self-expression while audaciously challenging the limits of contemporary ideas about beauty as we perceive and aspire to it. I'm amazed at the diverse range of ideas of beauty executed in the masterpieces, for example the two works above. While one portrays an abstract fleeting moment of beauty, the other is a classical portrait of Coco Rocha, depicting a traditional concept of beauty. In all, 'Extreme Beauty in Vogue' is definitely an iconic exhibition, what do you think?

Spotlight: Burfitt Spring 09

Burfitt is a Swedish upbeat brand designed by fashion illustrator Lovisa Burfitt. It is known for its pret-a-porter with an artful and dark aesthetic, mixing whimiscal elements with a rock-and-roll grungy sensibility.

Always featuring strong concepts in their catalogue - the spring 09 campaign appears vintage yet trendy with a nautical twist. Models are dressed as pin-up sailor dolls against a backdrop of the seashore. Fresh and summery, Burfitt's clothes do live up to its timeless aesthetic while playing up various spring trends - from the playful denim corseted playsuit, navy preppy jackets, to vintage floral frocks accesorized with sailor berets and beach hats.

Plastique's editorials are chock full of great models, gorgeous lighting and artful styling. This spring, the bi-annual magazine's choice of bright acids for has made it one of the outstanding spring magazines. This beauty spread is amazing, as acid shades take the stage. The colours so vibrant, yet both clashing and harmonious. I really like the way the make up colours are painted on her face in colour blocks and shapes. The model's wispy white hair puffed into a ball adds to the geometric appeal too. Overall this looks like a great interpretation of spring's bright colour trend with a quirky kitschy twist.

Runway Rave: Medieval Austerity at Prada

Hammered with bolts and nuts in contrast with bold colours, the heels definitely stood out for me...yet another hit this season! The inspiration of the collection is obvious... the medieval times, of WAR and CHIVALRY. Yet coupled with a tinge of austerity, the collection's colours were kept rather tame, and the structures were clean, such as the deep v-neck shift dresses tailored immaculately so as to flatter every female form. Towards the end of the show, the medieval knight inspiration was even more apparent -- the dresses - what seem to be dismantled armors - made it's way down the grey carpeted runway, strong as ever. The word AUSTERE seems to be the keyword too. According to the definition from dictionary.com, AUSTERE indicates a stern quality, and also a strict economy. A dual meaning? Perhaps. Challenging the credit crunch and economic downturn with an austere collection is, in my opinion, 100% appropriate.

Runway Rave: Graphing at Christopher Kane

Christopher Kane is one of my most anticipated shows. His previous seasons showed remarkable use of geometry, which included mostly circles, juxtaposed with animal prints. Having explored circles, he has moved on to lines and curves, and has brought the futuristic trend to a higher level by playing with layers to achieve various metallic sheens and shades. He proved that the futuristic look can be feminine too, as seen in the pleated dresses with ruffle-edge outlines in contrast with the rigid strokes on the sleeves and bustiers. Kane has shown once again that there will never be an exhaustion of ideas inspired by lines and shapes!

Runway Rave: Erin Fetherston

New York is always home to the most wearable yet fashionable designerwear, and the one designer I really love is Erin Fetherston. Her show allows girls to step into a fairyland, with all things girly and frilly.

This fall tailoring took stage alongside the signature cocktail dresses and gowns. At one glance, it can already be guessed that her inspiration came from toys - tin soldiers in particular, with models walking down the runway in black platform pumps. There were peplum jackets and military-inspired coats in a red and black jewelled tones, paired with poufy skirts in full swing, that made the collection fit for the fairies' military band. The tall berets, origami-like headpieces and various striped and shiny tights were a stunner, beautifully piecing together the tin soldier look.

The dreamy asymmetrical tulle frocks also stole the show. I am absolutely in love with the empire-waisted cocktail dresses and the closing white gown that were a great combination of metallic fabrics and tulle. This entire collection is spellbounding, and it gave the wooden toy fairytale a new breath of life.

New York fashion week has kicked off to a good start and it is time to go trendspotting. After browsing the newest collections online, I realised this fall is starting to be heavy on prints, taking roots from the savannah in Africa, with many looks camouflaged with the leopard tights.

Betsey Johnson fall 09/Diane von Fosternburg fall 09/ Miss Sixty fall 09

The Betsey Johnson girl has added animal-print tights to her hoodie and prom frock ensemble. DvF has hopped on the full-fledged safari trend with an army green parka, animal-print top and cheetah spotted legwear. The models look like they catwalked straight out of the safari. Miss Sixty stayed true to her rockability vibe, with muted blue tights paired with knee-length boots. This outfit is sure to look chic on the streets this fall.

I am looking forward to see more animal-printed tights...it is amazing how such a simple legwear can come in a myriad of creative patterns.

Runway Rave: Barbie Show

The iconic doll celebrated 50 years with a runway show featuring looks created by 50 American designers, including Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Anna Sui and Diane von Furstenberg. The world's top 51 models brought the doll to life in three themed wardrobe sets. The first looks were a tribute to the retro dolls of the '50s and '60s, some models were sent down the runway with cool wayfarer shades and clad shiny monochromatic prints and flowing ethereal pouf gowns.
This was followed by a Malibu Barbie-inspired crop with big teased hair and sweet pink makeup, and the finale featured edgier looks with clear plastic toppers that gave the audience a peek into Barbie's bright future. It was intriguing to view the various interpretations of the iconic barbie doll, all with the aim of honouring the 50-year-old doll, this time in a life-size version.

The show was not short of poofy dresses like Marchesa's fairytale-like creation and Monique L'huillier's girlish floral gown.

Therefore, what stood out for me were more cutting-edge designs that added vibe to the classic feminine and girly barbie image, such as this beauty pageant Reem Acra strapless red gown, and Catherine Malandrino's stars and stripes.

While Barbie went on a vacation at DVF, designers like Koi Suwannagate and Threeasfour chose to send cocktail dresses embellished with pop-up petals that are pretty in pink down the runway!

Beauty ad campaigns do reflect the essence of cosmetics brands. And I believe it is indeed important to choosee an ideal model to front the campaign. No stranger to beauty campaigns, these ads by Sasha are simply gorgeous. Her face is like a primed canvas awaiting an artist to add his magical touches.

In the Giorgio Armani fall 08/09 ad, her stoics emotions shine through and effectively brought out the classic and sophisticated feel of this line of cosmetics. The first picture is exceptionally breathtaking. It is a wonder how a simple minimalist look can be so impactful.

Unlike the previous campaign, Sasha starred in Biotherm spring 09's aquasource range that truly reflected her cheery disposition. She looks ever-so-youthful in this campaign with her dolly face and smile. Radiating youth and joy, Sasha is definitely an outstanding face of Biotherm with her dewy skin and healthy look.

It is indeed clever to classify each photo with quirky captions. Unlike the previous ed, this one really pays tribute to fashion's mad hatters and the most daring headpieces. I love it that they chose Kinee Douf as her dark skin is the ideal contrast for the milinery she adorned.

The haute couture shows in paris were not new, but it was nothing short of extravagant and beautiful. I loved the way designers such as Elie Saab and Valentino created cascading gowns in pastel shades, and how they played with layers of sheer chiffon and organza. But it was the rose that took the stage this spring, defining what new romanticism is.

At Chanel, the headpieces adorned with roses added colour to the largely monochromatic collection, whereas Valentino's little red shift dress appeared more romantic than futuristic with rose details. The last Valentino gown was a head turner with pretty ruffles folding into a rose at the back.

Runway Rave: Couture S/S 09

*We're really sorry for the lack of updates, as we just started our first year in junior college and are really busy with orientation :)

Another season of couture shows just rocked the fashion world. For me, the most outstanding was JEAN PAUL GAULTIER, followed by ARMANI PRIVE.
I really adore the concepts, inspirations and influences in both collections. While Jean Paul Gaultier's sheer dresses were imprinted with western calligraphic strokes that seemed to come alive while models floated down the runway, Armani Prive went heavy with structure and adorned the sharply tailored creations with motifs present in Chinese culture, such as dragons and lucky clouds.

What I appreciated most was that these collections, though loaded with lots of details and treats for the eye, were overall coherent, and not mere bombardment to the senses. Both sent strong first looks down the runway, and as the shows proceeded, a drama seemed to unfold in front of my eyes. The creations seemed to grow bigger and bolder, ending off with spectacular gowns that blew me away!

Show-stopping and jaw-dropping dresses graced the runway throughout the show:

This semi-circular shaped dress is one of a kind, and seems to display dome-shaped architectural influence, while the sheer gown on the right looks like an abstract piece of calligraphic work -- I love how Gaultier applies the calligraphic swirls to the edges of the gown, leading the viewer's eye down a smooth seam or fold on the gown.

The headpieces and accessories were as usual, impressive and exaggerated. Those fake hair pieces served as line art, fitting the calligraphic-inspired collection. So were the earrings, hair and makeup. Eyes and eyebrows were lined with bold, yet smooth strokes, as if the face were a piece of script for calligraphy. The models' hair was also combed neatly in curves at the sides of the faces, to correspond to the calligraphic and sinuous lines present in the collection.

On the other hand, Armani Prive showcased a striking collection with strong Chinese cultural influences, ranging from dragon motifs to red tassels found on lanterns. My favourite looks included:

Red and glossy black were dominant colours in the collection, while the lucky cloud motif repeated itself on the runway occasionally

While the structure of the red dress is rather reminescent of Alexander Mcqueen's architectural and sculpted dresses, the white dress reminds me of a porcelain vase with immaculate motifs of lotuses and waves painted on it -- Drop-dead gorgeous.

Model Moment: Kiki Kang

Placed at NY models in New York and Elite Barcelona, Kiki Kang is one of the freshest face from Asia. Unlike her fair-skin counterparts, her skin is of a healthy tan and her look is indeed very unique. The 18-year-old Sichuan model registered in modelling school in Dalian at the age of 15 with the dream of becoming a professional model one day.

She was a finalist at the Elite Model Look contest in 2007, and appeared in the Singapore Fashion Festival last year at Chinese designer Qiu Hao's (right) show. Her career has been blossoming, following catwalks in the major fashion capitals this spring, including Tsumori Chisato (left), Jean Paul Gaultier (centre) and Hermes.

She reminds me of Chanel Iman in this particular photo - the same pouty lips and nose. Nonetheless, she is one who breaks the traditional stereotype of asian models, proving that not all pretty asians are those with fair complexion, petite cherry lips and an "ethnic" look.

This looks like a mega-trend this season, and I absolutely adore it...some pieces that are not to be missed include:

Scallops aside, the polka dot resurfaced and multiplied at a high frequency on the runways too...

Dong Dong Dong Qiang! Red and Prosperous for the arrival of Chinese New Year...

It's the second day of Chinese New Year!

Before I proceed to my post, I would like to thank JustJR, for putting mode-ulation on her list of 2009 mini guide. We express our sincere thanks!

Now, red represents fortune and prosperity in the chinese culture. During this period of the year, children will receive red packets (known as ang pows) from their elders, and red decorations such as firecrakers and couplets will adorn homes.

Everyone would dress in new clothes, preferably of a prosperous shade, that is, red. But not all that is red is Valentino, designers like Diane von Furstenberg, too, sent red down the runways this season. My favourite is this Dolce & Gabbana dress shaped like what else but a red packet!

A simple red shift dress like that of Lanvin is ideal for the occasion ,while a casual red dress is incredibly sexy with black stilettos (John Galliano) and an off-shoulder is really feminine with flowers in your hair (Diane von Furstenberg).

Something more relevant to Chinese New Year is the familiar brocade pattern found on silk (bottom first Andrew Gn), or engravings often seen on pillars of a Buddhist temple (bottom second, Dries van Noten). Take these two runway looks for example -- they're risks worth taking to get into the festive mood!

I really wish to own a dress that gives a twist to traditional chinese culture, and this Jason Wu dress with Chinese paper cut prints would be perfect! Young and feminine, it is a mix of tradition and modernity, ideal for Chinese New Year visitations!!

Kiata Kwanda showed at Singapore Fashion Festival last year together with 4 other young Asian designers. Brought up in a traditional Chinese family, he is strongly influenced by Asian cultures and incorporates Oriental lines and forms in his designs.

His past spring 08 collection is truly avant-garde, reflecting his design aesthetics and attention to details and fabric. It expressed both his individuality and roots as an Asian designer, with the use of traditional chinese knots and intricate pleats. In his clever juxtaposition of sheer and tough black fabric, his clothes appear sleek and stylish, yet a far cry from commercialism.

While Singapore is giving SFF a miss this year in preparation for a bigger event in the year to come, I really hope that they will continue to bring in more rising Asian designers like Kiata Kwanda who are cutting-edge and innovative.

This ad looks like a page out of an editorial that features fresh spring faces that rejuvenate the senses. Missoni has never failed to surprise once again -- from last season's dark green leafy and mysterious setting to this spring's pastel hued flowery prints, the ads are always clean cut with interesting compositions and excellent retouching -- don't the models look like mannequins? This really is my fave of the season even though only one ad is out.

Every season, Giorgio Armani showcases the clothes' fluidity and movement, choosing to display the elegance of its signature soft, flowy gowns that flatter every woman's body. With a monochromatic palette and sharp contrasts, the texture and silhouettes of the clothes are featured beautifully on supermodel Sasha Pivovarova who looks like a Greek Goddess. That fierce stare of hers brings out an effortless contrast of hard and soft, producing a stunning piece of work.

When I first saw this ad, a real life Cluedo appeared in my mind. The still posture of the models, standing in what seems to be a library in a mansion at midnight contribute to the eerie silence that hangs in the air. Tense? Not quite. Sophisticated and mysterious, rather. As compared to the previous seasons' blurry ads, this season's ad is more still and composed.

2008 Olympic Gold-medallist gymnast Nastia Liukin shows off her moves in wedges and dainty dresses in this season's ads for Max Azria. A clean background is a wise choice, as it emphasizes the movement and energy of the powerful kicks and stunts. I really love how her solid moves bring out the soft drapery of the dresses too.

What's hotter than two supermodels wrestling in Dsquared's signature revealing black gowns? I really love the dusty and dirty setting and the contrast between Naomi Campbell's dark skin and Linda Evangelista's fair white skin. In all, this is really fierce and it works!

Strongest cast, most strategic and impactful...

PRADA, BALENCIAGA

Nothing can go wrong with a powerful cast of supermodels-to-be and Prada's ruched bras and bags. Wearing fierce expressions on their faces, these blonde beauties make up and awesome shop display. This campaign is definitely strategic as it showcases so many outfits in a two-page spread.

Balenciaga exudes a mysterious, eerie feel by creating stairways to the future, and placing a robotic models in the shiny, futuristic dresses that stand out against the background. I really like the greenish-silvery colour scheme that adheres so well to the theme.

Laid-back tranquility, simply soothing to the senses...

BURBERRY PRORSUM

This campaign calms the nerves. As compared to the fierce and mysterious campaigns of other big fashion names, Burberry encourages us to relax in these recession times. Shot against an old English country garden setting, this campaign exudes an inexplicable tranquility and beauty of the trenches and dresses in earthy tones.

BLUMARINE, CHLOE

Although I'm a little appalled at the choice of model for Blumarine's campaign (Natasha seems a little too fierce), the pastel hues and beautiful background really exudes an ancient greek Goddess feel that goes so well with the gorgeous silk Blumarine gowns.

Chloe, on the other hand, opts for a rocky background so as to make the satin clothes appear more outstanding. I also really love the centralized composition of the ad.

This spring is the ideal season to conjure up new, billowing silhouettes as seen on the runways such as Christopher Kane and Chloe. The scallop-edged napel yellow coat and sheer jacket sure has a hint of summer freshness in them. Scallop edges are not only limited to outerwear, but their mini versions are also spotted on hemlines and skirts, lining pants and cropped blouses. It is indeed refreshing to see such details on fine threads, on top of the doodles, speech bubbles and spines of cartoon dinosaurs.

With positive space comes negative space- this Casadei peep-toe gladiator is one of a kind, with scallop-shaped cut-outs and a horn heel sculpted like an art deco piece.

NAFA Open House 09

We visited NAFA on saturday to take a look at the student works and the campus (even though we were going to junior college). There were many other young sec 4 students too. It was really an eye-opening experience and I particularly enjoyed the works which won the Crowbar awards done by the Design and Media students, and touring the fashion campus.

I really loved Ridhwan's illustrations on anorexia (first came upon his work at here through vogueite's blog). They were really stylish and fun. The fashion campus on bencoolen street was not very big, but it had really high-tech equipment used in the industry other than just sewing machines, such as those that create buttonholes, smocking and so on. There were student works like mood boards and sketches, and photos of graduating collections on display that were rather impressive. We also attended two talks on the fashion industry.

The one titled Insights into Fashion Business was by lecturer Stephanie Besserer, who is a swedish visual merchandiser and fashion designer, who worked for H&M (wow) before, and studied at ESMOD tokyo. She designed many window displays and described her job as something challenging yet interesting, as fast paced fashion retailers will need to change displays often and she has to follow with the flow. She is now starting a label in dancewear.

The second was by designer Bernie Xu, who gave us a talk on Starting a Fashion Label. He talked about the research and design process, followed by a Q&A. It became more interesting when he talked about an interview he had with the board of Central St Martins when he studied fashion in NAFA. They rejected him and encourage him to join London College of Fashion instead. He was really frustrated and when he asked them why he was not accepted, they told him that he has no tattoos, does not drink/smoke etc. which was prevalent in their school. Now he's really thankful that he did not enter CSM too as the school's culture may not be suitable for everyone.

The trip to NAFA was really enjoyable as we got a free goodie bag! And we learned much about fashion education and this competitive business. Will definitely look out for more similar opportunities in the future.

Fresh Spreads: Showcasing the New Collections

The new season marks a wardrobe revamp for both fashion victims and fashion magazines, as magazines embark on a journey to feature the most outstanding hits of the Spring-Summer 2009 collections. With titles such as "Spring Break", "Hits of the Season" and "The Best of What's New", the newest and freshest pieces of big names are filling the pages of these prestigious magazines. Some of the most outstanding pieces such as Prada's ruched bras, Jil Sander's fringe dresses, Marc Jacobs' Kimono tops, Burberry's leafy necklaces and Lanvin's famous ruffles can be spotted in nearly all the spreads featuring the new collections. It is thus interesting to see how different photographers and stylists are showcasing these new pieces to their best.

Vogue US was guaranteed a good start by choosing two young supermodels Chanel Iman and Jourdan Dunn! While Chanel is mostly all smiles, Jourdan proves to be fierce, and together with the jump shots, the vibe of spring is exuded effortlessly. Moreover, the plaid ponytail probably inspired by Louis Vuitton's show is perfect for the shoot as it's swishing actions caught mid air enhances the energy in the shots. In all, this indoor shoot might have turned out boring, but the clothes, the styling and the models worked the concept of Spring so well it's one of my faves.

Indeed, it has been a long while since such inspiring spreads appeared in Vogue US. Unlike the previous editorial which appears to be more commercialized and brand-oriented, this spread is more of a showcase of the collections as art pieces -- art pieces that emerge from the whimsical setting, as the title "It's a Madcap World" suggests.

While magazines such as Vogue US aim to capture the energy in Spring's new collections, Vogue China opts for the breezy feel of Spring, paying most attention to the silhouettes of the clothing. Meticulous styling ensured that the entire editorial seems to transit smoothly - from the balloon Lanvin sleeve to the circular cut-out Christopher Kane dress then to the body-hugging Roberto Cavalli gown. Last but not least, Liu Wen's beauty exudes a calming effect in accordance with the flowy fabrics, creating a breathtaking editorial.

This mega-spread showcases the clothes beautifully as the setting of every page is carefully planned so that it caters to the feel of the clothes. For example, the golden sparkling Alexander Mcqueen bodysuit is shot against a blurred background of a brightly lit street and the black voluminous Fendi jacket is shot against a clear sky and edited to be black and white. Each and every shot was a masterpiece.

Spotlight: BNX Korea

BNX is an established Korean street fashion label I recently found out about while "window shopping" on the net. The designer Kay Lee is touted as the "Marc Jacobs of Korea".

BNX is an extraordinarily hip, yet elegant collection of feminine and chic casual items from South Korea. The “BN” stands for “Be Natural,” meaning that every design strives for artistic expressions of style and originality. The BNX woman is feminine yet romantic, and desires wearable but not OTT pieces in her wardrobe. Lee has successfully kept true to her aesthetic believes in her fall 08/09 collection.

BNX drew inspiration from the urban streetstyle of new yorkers in town, a poetic potpourri of the boho and retro, and sportism expressed in a rich colour spectrum. The collection consists of many unique styles, including vintage tweed jackets with romantic fur collars and rustic plaid skirts and shift dresses.

The designs boost rich and sophisticated details, pulling off a idyllic and casual style.

Style Scout: Bringing the House of Sprouse Down

The Louis Vuitton's Stephen Sprouse Tribute Party was a bash of neon prints, with walls splashed with sprouses' famous graffiti. As usual, supposedly-edgy Agyness Deyn turned up in bright hues, opting for a graffiti-ed coat, strapless LBD and a statement orange necklace. So is Agy edgy, or plain trashy? In my opinion, she dressed appropriately for the occasion. Brave enough to ditch her usual garish-from-head-to-toe ensemble, this outfit has not gone overboard.

Chanel looks really cute in this white dress paired with a leather jacket! I thought she would be a little more experimental when turning up for this Stephen Sprouse Tribute party (like playing with a colour?), rather than sticking to a monochromatic palette. But she compensated it with her cheeky hairstyle -- a twisted updo with bangs!

Arlenis Sosa, the new 'It' girl, opted for a black Louis Vuitton dress. She saved it from appearing boring by accessorizing with huge beaded necklaces, a cuff and a pair of grey heels. Being playful sure does help to jazz up the outfit.

Maryna Linchuk channelled her usual rocker vibe at the party. I like the studded biker jacket and wet-look leggings, but this is nothing special. Nevertheless, she still looks great, I mean, how can she go wrong?

Frontpage: No Chinese New Year for Vogue China?

I was really hoping to see an editorial featuring chinese traditional costumes as Chinese New Year is round the corner! In two weeks' time, China (and Singapore, of course) will be bustling with festive activities and yet, not a single glimpse of excitement is present in Vogue China. Oh wells, maybe a glimpse of prosperity (red symbols prosperity) in Ali Stephen's warm red beauty ed in the January issue could count, but it should be high time for the magazine to fuse some cultural elements with haughty high fashion. Instead of proudly showcasing chinese culture in it, Vogue China opted for "a fashion-insider theme", which is, in our opinion, rather disappointing..

So who says high fashion is exclusive of tradition? In my opinion, tradition is a source of inspiration for fashion - and we ought to be proud of this.

I'm really looking forward to Chinese New Year! We have this really cute cheongsam-inspired top which we have been wearing for nearly two Chinese New Years. (A classmate of mine from China told me it's actually a Tang Dynasty costume's print!) CNY's all about reunion, ang pows (red packets with $), yummy goodies and wearing red clothes (to represent prosperity). It's really comforting to see that tradition is still keeping up with modern times. Well, tradition can be put to great use in fashion as well.

Serafima V. is with IMG models and Ave management in Singapore, thus she landed a cover on Style: Singapore Jan 09! We bought this issue as it is the ART issue and the cover is really funky with Stephen Sprouse for LV's neon graffiti prints. It has successfully channelled the 80s bright colours with Serafima on the cover. There is also a feature on Dior's collaboration with Chinese artists named When Dior met Mao and a Spring 09 review of the major catwalks. Serafima is also on the Bazaar Singapore Jan 09 cover.

Standing at 1.81m and with a face like a wide-eyed pixie, she burst into the scene during fall 07's fashion shows, scoring a Prada exclusive in Milan amist several other shows in Paris. This spring, she walked a total of 12 shows, including Christian Dior and Marc by Marc Jacobs.

She has an outstanding forehead, but nevertheless looks so fairy-like in pastel pink cheeks and cherry lips. Her cheekbones and dolly eyes go so well together, especially with her bold bangs. With such an impactful face, this 20-year-old sure has a long way to strut down the catwalk.

The boho vibe is blowing through the fashion industry, as designers get inspired by pretty paisleys, floral prints and ethnic tie-dye. But what we love most are the pretty blooms -not the prints- but the corsages that adorn the beautiful frocks. So kudos to those who sent their models down the runways wrapped in floral bouquets that are fresh and fragrant.

Everyone once admired models for their beauty, their slimness and their mile-long legs. One more should be added to this list – personal style! While some keep it simple with basics such as cardigans and black skinny jeans, others go for daring dos, experimenting with fur and leggings.

Some of the teen models who are on their way to stardom are also style-makers on the rise, moving and shaking the streets of fashion week in their stylish ensembles.

First, there's 18 year old Ali Michael. As sweet as she may appear to be, her tough rocker style is the exact opposite. Many models arm themselves with a leather biker jacket, just like Ali does, but somehow she seems to pull it off well cos of this innocent face of hers.

How can one not mention Jourdan Dunn when it comes to discussing teen models? One of the freshest faces in the scene, Jourdan establishes a cute, youthful style which is rare among models nowadays. I must say her style isn't as consistent as theabovementioned, but she's one to watch in the next few seasons to come!

Next comes Chanel Iman whom teens are so familiar with. Known for her boho-chic street style, she never fails to channel this rocker vibe that took the fashion world by storm. At events, she opts for youthful, sexy frocks. Needless to say, she's one of my favourites!

Last but not least, 17 year old Irina Kulikova is fast becoming one of my favourites. Though it seems to me that her style is very much similar to Lily Donaldson, Irina wins when it comes to experimentation.

While this spring seems to favour a muted palette with pale pastel colours and sheer fabrics, bold loud colours have not lost their well, boldness. Think zesty citrus-tangerine, acid lime and lemon, bubble gum fuschia and saturated blue.They can be spotted occasionally amist earthy-toned collections such as Celine, DKNY and Balmain. These traffic-stopping hues are extant in mini dresses as seen above, but to prevent dayglo overload, shoes and accessories with tinges of bright shades are worth a go.

I was seriously blown away by the breathtaking autumn foliage in this editorial! This really is one of the best beauty editorials I've seen in Vogue -- how the makeup and outfits go with the scenery, the perfect choice of All-american beauty Ali Stephens to pull of such a sleek idea, and the flawless composition of every shot. I really like the usage of hot red lips and a palette of reddish-blue eye colour in order that a wholesome effect is produced, that is the dark navy blue outfits in contrast to the ravishing red foliage in the background. In all, this editorial has captured autumn at its richest.

Let the Ad out of the bag: Chez Miu Miu...

The S/S 09 campaigns are trickling in one by one and there are some very promising ones that have grabbed my attention, like those of Burberry Prorsum and Longchamp. But what I'm looking forward to most is the Miu Miu campaign.

Not only has it kept it's visual appeal for the past few seasons, it's cast is also highly interesting, starring Katie Holmes, my favourite new comer Myf Shepherd, wide-eyed pixie looking Imogen Morris Clarke, Sophie Srej, etc. Such an intriguing blend of models should be a surefooted step towards an attention-grabbing campaign once again.

Having adopted a vibrant and rich colour scheme, the S/S 08 and F/W 08 campaigns brought out the vibe and youthfulness of the clothes. What impressed me even more is that even though the use of colour is bold and vivacious, the clothes never seem to fade into the background, nor do the colours seem to overwhelm the model.

So fur so good

Ai tominaga appeared in French Revue de Modes f.w. 08/09 in a fur editorial Wild World. Everything about it is mindblowing, the stark contrast of black, white and red and her varied poses and fierce facial expressions. I particularly love this close up.

The crimson red lipstick and her face somehow reminded me of the startling truth behind the affinity shared by fashion and fur. I immediately linked this editorial's fur theme to these two collages.

I saw them in the French-Chinese book titled Sortir de la Routine in my school's art lab. They are created by the author, a Chinese designer who studied in ESMOD paris. He was inspired to create the collages after watching some haute couture shows, where several animal activists would courageously riot against the fur trade at the top of their voices before the shows. Sadly speaking, fur is still a symbol of luxury and its importance undeniable in the fashion industry. Well, Singapore's weather is intolerant of fur and even in the most chilly days during the monsoon season, I will choose faux fur over the real thing though.
